Compulsory tests and examinations :

Quality of material and surface (Z87.1-MS04)

The aim of this test is to evidence all material and surface faults present on the eyepieces of personal eye protection equipment and ophthalmic eyepieces.

The observation zone is 30 mm around the reference point, it excludes a marginal zone of 5 mm from the edge of the lens. A large range of faults may be observed on the latter (e.g.: bubbles, embedding, scratches, cracks…).

Haze (Z87.1-MH02)


Optical power ( Z87.1-PO05)


Difference in prismatic power (Z87.1-DP05)

The aim of this test is to assess the difference in the prismatic power of a frame by measuring the deviations, horizontal and vertical, of the rays crossing the eyepieces.

The interpretation of the results depends on the standard tested.


Drop ball (Z87.1-SR08)


Resistance to ignition (16034-RI02)

The aim of this test is to check the performance of eye protective equipment or of a pair of ophthalmic spectacles on the contact of an arm mounted at 650 °C.

The sample is compliant if it doesn’t catch fire, and if it does not continue to glow after the flame source has been removed.


Resistance to corrosion (Z87.1-RC01)

This test enables us to test the resistance of personal eye protection equipment (with metal parts) to corrosion, in an aqueous solution.

The sample is compliant if no oxidation or appearance fault is observed.


Field of vision (166-CV04)

This test enables us to measure the part of space visible through a mask or spectacles, by verifying the contour of the frame using ellipsis.

The sample is compliant if the spectacles frame does not obstruct vision.

Adjustment and adaptation for masks ( Z87.1-AJA1)

This test enables us to check by visual inspection of the holding of ski goggles in use, and its adaptation to the shape of the face.

The sample is compliant if the surfaces in contact with the face are made in a flexible, soft material, and if the headband is elastic or adjustable and provides firm holding at the back of the head or helmet. The whole headband must resist all the stresses it is subjected to under normal use, without tearing or suffering permanent deformation.


Variation of the factor of transmission between 2 oculars ( Z87.1-VFT1)


Side protection (Z87.1-PL01)

This test enables us to verify the eye protector’s side protections. It is carrying out using a rod, by sounding the front and side planes of the frame, trying to touch the impact point areas situated on the artificial head.

The sample is compliant if the eye protector prevents the point of the rod from touching the impact areas situated on the artificial head.


Protection against particles thrown at high speed (Z87.1-PGV1)

This test enables us to test the resistance of personal protective equipment to particles thrown at high speed, up to 120 m/s.

The eyepiece is compliant if the sample does not get deformed, does not break, this applying also to the eyepiece housing and the frame, and if the side protection is not defective.


Protection against droplets and projections of liquids (Z87.1-PG01)

This test enables us to test the resistance of a spectacles-mask protector against droplets or against snow, by testing its impermeability.

The sample is compliant when its sealing requirement is adhered to.


Protection against the gas and the fine particles of dust (Z87.1-PFP1)
