Compulsory tests and examinations :

Transmittance and lens category (14889-FT06)

This test enables us to measure, at the reference point, the transmission factor (visible and UV) of a lens, to determine its category and to check requirements relating to car driving and road users (recognition of traffic lights). The standard defining the admissible tolerances is ISO 8980-3.

Material and surface quality (14889-MS03)

The aim of this test is to evidence all material and surface defects present on the eyepieces of personal eye protective equipment and ophthalmic eyepieces.

The observation zone is 30 mm around the reference point, it excludes a marginal zone of 5 mm from the edge of the lens. A large range of defects may be observed on the latter (e.g.: bubbles, embedding, scratches, cracks…).


Resistance to ignition (14889-RI01)

The aim of this test is to check the performance of eye protective equipment or of a pair of ophthalmic spectacles on the contact of an arm mounted at 650 °C.

The sample is compliant if it doesn’t catch fire, and if it does not continue to glow after the flame source has been removed.


UV ageing (14889-RRU7)

This test enables us, according to the claimed filter category, to establish a relative variation of the transmission factor in the visible after 25 hours’ exposure to Ultra Violet rays.

The sample is compliant where all the specific requirements of standard ISO 8980-3 are satisfied.


Mechanical resistance (14889-SM01)

This test is carried out on unframed lenses; it enables us to verify their resistance to a quasi-static load. In order to conduct this test, a pressure of 100 N ±2 N is exercised on the lens by a steel ball of 22 mm’s nominal diameter.

The sample is compliant if no lens fracturing or lens deformation is observed.


Optical specifications (14889-SOP1)

This test enables us to check, at the reference point of an ophthalmic spectacles’ lens, and using a frontofocometer, the focal power of each principal meridian, the direction of the cylinder axis, the power of the addition and the prismatic power. Geometrical tolerances (14889-TGE0)

This test enables us to check, using a slide gauge and a calliper gauge, the diameter of the lens and the thickness of the lens given by the manufacturer (nominal value).

The sample is compliant if the diameter measured does not deviate from the nominal value by more than -1 mm and + 2 mm. The thickness measured must also fall within ±0.3 mm of the nominal thickness given by the manufacturer.

Multi-focal lenses are subject to tolerances on the dimension of their segment. The latter must not deviate from the nominal value by more than ±0.5 mm.

If the marking on the spectacles lens indicates the polarization plane, the difference in angle between the polarization plane and the lens marking must not exceed ± 3° (ISO 8980-3).

Special transmittance requirement for polarizing lenses and degree and ratio of polarization (14889-EPP1)

This test enables us to determine, for polarizing filters, the ratio of the values of the transmission factors in the visible parallel and perpendicular to the polarization plane.

The sample is compliant if the ratio is above 8:1 in categories 2, 3 and 4 or is above 4:1 for category 1.


Reflectance and average reflectance (14889-FRFM)

Where solar lenses are declared non-reflective, the reflectance in the visible must be less than 2.5 % of reflection. The test is carried out using a spectrophotometer.


Transmittance (clear T0/dark T1) and filter category for photochromic lenses (14889-FT13)

This test enables us to measure, at a reference point, the transmission factor of a filter (visible and UV) to determine its category and check requirements relating to car driving and road users (recognition of traffic lights).

There are 5 filters categories from the lightest (cat 0) to the darkest (cat 4). The UV transmission requirements differ in function of the category.


Resistance to abrasion including visual checking before and afterwards (14889-RABR)

This test enables us to verify whether a lens declared as resistant to abrasion (hardening treatment) is resistant to damage caused by cleaning or wear under normal use.

The sample is compliant if no trace of abrasion is visible on the two lens faces after the test.
