Compulsory tests and examinations :

Marking and information control (16034-MI09)

All markings must be applied indelibly on spectacles:

The manufacture must detail either on the frame, on a hanging tag or on a self-adhesive label, the binocular discrepancy and the warning that they are not suitable for driving or for road users.

He must also indicate on a hanging tag or adhesive label that he declares them compliant with the current international standard, its number and year of publication, and also the following warnings:


Bridge distortion / Lens resistance characteristics (16034-DPMV)

The aim of this test is to measure the permanent deformation of the bridge of a pair of solar or ophthalmic spectacles by exercising on the latter a force of 5 N over a distance equal to 10 % of the inter-pupil value and thus to evidence the minimum toughness or the deformation of the bridge of a pair of spectacles.

The sample is compliant if no fracturing or cracking is observed over the frame as a whole, if the permanent deformation is = 2 % of the inter-pupil distance, and if the test lens does not break and remains in its housing.


Endurance (hinges) (16034-SME1)

This test enables us to determine a frame’s mechanical stability by simulating the gesture of a person carrying his spectacles in one hand (this creates stresses on the hinges and over the whole front of the frame).

The sample is compliant if the frame presents no cracks, fracturing or change in the movement of the arm (the latter must not close back under its own weight), and if the frame presents no permanent deformation in excess of 5 mm compared to its original position.


Transmittance (16034-FT06)

This test enables us to measure, at the reference point, the transmission factor of a filter (visible and UV), to determine its category and to check requirements relating to car driving and road users  (recognition of traffic lights).

There are 5 filter categories from the lightest (Cat 0) to the darkest (Cat 4). The UV transmission requirements differ in function of the category.


Nickel release (16034-LN02)

This test enables us to measure the rate of nickel released by the different parts of metal frames (rounds, bridges and arms).

For a sample to be compliant, the measured rate of nickel released from the entire frame, must be less than 0.5 µg/cm²/week.


Material and surface quality (16034-MS03)

The aim of this test is to evidence all material and surface defects present on the eyepieces of personal eye protective equipment and ophthalmic eyepieces.

The observation zone is 30 mm around the reference point, it excludes a marginal zone of 5 mm from the edge of the lens. A large range of defects may be observed on the latter (e.g.: bubbles, embedding, scratches, cracks…).


Resistance to perspiration (16034-RTR1)

This test enables us to verify the resistance of a frame (metal or plastic material) to perspiration. The frame is suspended above a solution of artificial sweat inside a sealed receptacle which is placed in an oven at 55°C.

The sample is compliant if, after 8 hours’ exposure, it presents neither stains, nor colour alteration and after 24 hours, neither corrosion, nor degradation of the surface nor unsticking of one of the coating layers (on the parts likely to come into contact with the skin).


Resistance to ignition (16034-RI02)

The aim of this test is to check the performance of eye protective equipment or of a pair of ophthalmic spectacles on the contact of an arm mounted at 650 °C.

The sample is compliant if it doesn’t catch fire, and if it does not continue to glow after the flame source has been removed.


UV ageing (16034-RRU7)

This test enables us, according to the claimed filter category, to establish a relative variation of the transmission factor in the visible after 25 hours’ exposure to Ultra Violet rays.

The sample is compliant where all the specific requirements of standard ISO 8980-3 are satisfied.


Mechanical resistance (16034-SM01)

The aim of this test is to measure the permanent deformation of the bridge of a pair of solar or ophthalmic spectacles by exercising on the latter a force of 5 N over a distance equal to 10% of the inter-pupil value, and thus to evidence the minimum toughness or the deformation of the bridge of a pair of spectacles.

Dimensionally stable at high temperatures (16034-SDTE)

This test enables us to test the resistance of the frames of ophthalmic spectacles to high temperatures.

The aim of this test is to find out the deformation of the opening of the arms caused by exposure to a high temperature (55°C). The sample is compliant if deformation does not exceed +6 mm and -12 mm (for large frames) compared to its original position.


Measurement system / Dimensional tolerances (16034-SMTD)

This test enables us to verify the dimensions detailed by the manufacture, marked on all types of ophthalmic spectacles.

The frame is compliant if the measurements made fall within the following tolerances:


Optical power tolerances (16034-SOP2)

This test enables us to verify, using a frontofocometer and at the reference point, a lens’s focal power. The nominal power for close vision must be between +1.00 and 3.50 dioptres.

The sample is compliant if the standard’s tolerances are adhered to.


Prismatic optical power tolerances (16034-SPP1)

This test enables us to verify the prismatic power deviation/discrepancy (horizontal: per lens  vertical: difference between lenses) measured at the reference points specified by the manufacturer. This deviation/discrepancy must not exceed the values given by the standard.



Optional tests and examinations :

Resistance to optical rays frame only (16034-RR01)

This test enables us to test the resistance of the frames of optical spectacles (plastic or metal) to 25 hours of intense rays.

The sample is compliant if the loss of colour of the frame is less than or equal to level 4.5 of the grey scale.
