Sunglasses - ANSI Z80.3 : 2015

Compulsory tests and examinations :

Marking and control information (Z80.3-MI03)

The supplier or manufacturer must provide the reference of the standard on the packaging or in the form of an affixed label as well as "Made in ...".


Luminous transmittance (Z80.3-FT03)

This test enables us to measure, at the reference point, the transmission factor of a filter (visible and UV), to determine its category and to check requirements relating to car driving and road users (recognition of traffic lights).

There are 3 filter categories from the lightest (Cosmetic) to the darkest (Special purpose). The UV transmission requirements differ in function of the category.



Refractive power (Z80.3-PO03)

The aim of this test is to measure the values of the spherical, astigmatic and prismatic powers of lenses. The measurements are made at the reference point.

The interpretation of the results, with regard to optical power, depends on the standard tested.


Cosmetic quality (Z80.3-MS01)

The aim of this test is to evidence all material and surface defects present on the eyepieces of personal eye protective equipment and ophthalmic eyepieces.

The observation zone is 30 mm around the reference point, it excludes a marginal zone of 5 mm from the edge of the lens. A large range of defects may be observed on the latter (e.g.: bubbles, embedding, scratches, cracks…).


UV ageing (Z80.3-RRU1)

This test enables us, according to the claimed filter category, to establish a relative variation of the transmission factor in the visible and of the reduced luminance coefficient, after 50 hours’ exposure to the Ultra Violet rays.

The sample is compliant when all the standard-specific requirements are satisfied.


Impact resistance (Z80.3-SR06)

This test enables us to verify the resistance of ophthalmic lenses to an impact produced by a steel ball of nominal diameter 15.9mm and a mass of 16g. This test is carried out from a height of 127cm, within a circle of 16mm in diameter, at the geometrical centre of the lens

The sample is compliant if no breakage or lens deformation is observed.


Flammability (eyepiece) (Z80.3-RI04)

The aim of this test is to check the performance of the oculars on contact with an arm mounted at 650 °C.

The sample is compliant if it doesn’t catch fire, and if it does not continue to glow after the flame source has been removed.


Flammability (Z80.3-RI05)

The aim of this test is to check the performance of an eye protective equipment on contact with an arm mounted at 650 °C.

The sample is compliant if it doesn’t catch fire, and if it does not continue to glow after the flame source has been removed.


Uniform density lenses (Z80.3-UD01)

This test enables us to check the variation of the transmission factor in the visible (comparison between two measurements) of a single filter.

The difference in density between the two measurements must be less than or equal to 0.05.


Imbalance between lenses (Z80.3-VD01)

This test enables us to verify the variation, of the transmission factor in the visible of a single frame. Measurements are taken at the centre of vision between the right eyepiece and the left eyepiece.

The difference in density between the right eyepiece and the left eyepiece must be less than or equal to 0.12.


Frame finish (ANSI-COTT)


Physiological compatibility (ANSI-CP01)

This test enables us to measure the rate of nickel released by the different parts of metal frames (rounds, bridges and arms).


Difference in prismatic power (ANSI-DP01)

The aim of this test is to assess the difference in the prismatic power of a frame by measuring the deviations, horizontal and vertical, of the rays crossing the eyepieces.

The interpretation of the results depends on the standard tested.


Resistance to corrosion (ANSI-RC01)

This test enables us to test the resistance of personal eye protection equipment (with metal parts) to corrosion, in an aqueous solution.

The sample is compliant if no oxidation or appearance fault is observed.


Frame deformation and retention of lenses (ANSI-RM01)

The aim of this test is to measure the solar or ophthalmic spectacles glasses bridge permanent deformation by exercising on the latter a force of 5 N over a distance equal to 10 % of the inter-pupil value and thus to highlight the minimum robustness or the deformation of the bridge of glasses.

The sample is compliant if no fracturing or cracking is observed over the frame as a whole, if the permanent deformation is = 2 % of the inter-pupil distances, and if the test lens does not break and remains in its housing.



Optional tests and examinations :

Transmittance (clear T0/dark T1) and filter category for photochromic filters (Z80.3-FT13)

This test enables us to measure, at a reference point, the transmission factor of a filter (visible and UV) to determine its category and check requirements relating to car driving and road users (recognition of traffic lights).

There are 5 filters categories from the lightest (cat 0) to the darkest (cat 4). The UV transmission requirements differ in function of the category.


Special transmission requirement for polarising filters and polarisation ratio Type I and Type II (Z80.3-EPP2)

This test enables us to determine, for polarising filters, the ratio of the values of the transmission factors in the visible parallel and perpendicular to the polarisation plane.

If the ratio is above 8, the sample is compliant in Type II, if it is above 20 the sample is of Type I.


Special requirement for shaded filters only (Z80.3-EPD2)

This requirement enables us to verify the variations in transmission of a shaded filter. The measurements are taken on the horizontal axis and at a point 10mm from the optical centre on the vertical axis.

The sample is compliant if the variation of the horizontal density is no more than 0.2 and that of the vertical density no more than 1.3.

Axis of polarization (ANSI-OP01)

This test enables us to determine, on a pair of solar spectacles framed and fitted with a polarising filter, the polarisation plane.

The sample is compliant if the polarisation plane does not deviate more than ±5° from horizontal. The alignment discrepancy between the right and left polarisation filters must not exceed 6°.
