Compulsory tests and examinations :

Field of view and extent of protection (1067-CV02)

This test enables us to verify the eyewire of a solar spectacles frame using an ellipsis technique.

The sample is compliant if the frame does not obstruct vision.


Marking and information control (1067-MI02)

All markings must be clear and permanent. The supplier or manufacturer must provide at least the following information, in the form of a marking on the frame, an affixed label or packaging:


Transmittance and filter category (1067-FT01)

This test enables us to measure, at the reference point, the transmission factor of a filter (visible and UV), to determine its category and to check requirements relating to car driving and road users (recognition of traffic lights).

There are 5 filter categories from the lightest (Cat 0) to the darkest (Cat 4). The UV transmission requirements differ in function of the category.


Homogeneity of transmittance in the visible with UV requirements (1067-HFT3)

This test enables us to check the variation of the transmission factor in the visible (comparison between two measurements) and in the UVs of a single filter.

The larger of these two measurements being the one considered, must not exceed 15% and the UV requirements must be met.


Homogeneity of transmittance (mounted eye-pieces) (1067-HFT4)

This test enables us to verify the variation in relative value of the transmission factor in the visible of a single frame. The measurements are made at the centre of vision between the right ocular and the left ocular.

The variation must not exceed 15% (related to the lightest filter).


Optical power of oculars (1067-PO02)

The aim of this test is to measure the values of the spherical, astigmatic and prismatic powers of lenses. The measurements are made at the reference point.

The interpretation of the results, with regard to optical power, depends on the standard tested.


Prismatic power difference (1067-DP02)

The aim of this test is to measure the difference in prismatic power of a frame by measuring the deviations, horizontal and vertical, of a beam crossing the eyepiece.

The interpretation of the results depends on the standard tested.


Resistance to ignition (eyepiece) (1067RI01)

The aim of this test is to check the performance of the oculars on contact with an arm mounted at 650 °C.

The sample is compliant if it doesn’t catch fire, and if it does not continue to glow after the flame source has been removed.


Resistance to ignition (1067-RI02)

The aim of this test is to check the performance of eye protective equipment or of a pair of ophthalmic spectacles on contact with an arm mounted at 650 °C.

The sample is compliant if it doesn’t catch fire, and if it does not continue to glow after the flame source has been removed.


Enhanced robustness – entire frame (1067-SR05)

This test enables us to check the robustness of solar protectors. It is carried out with a device that lets a steel ball of a diameter of 16mm and of 16g fall from a height of 1.27 m.

The sample is compliant if it does not get deformed, if it does not break, if the side protection is not deficient, and if the eyepiece housing does not break.


Uniformity of colour per lens pair (1067-UC01)

This test enables us to verify, by visual observation against a white background, the uniformity and consistency of the shade of lenses.

The sample must not have any shade variation visible to the naked eye.



Optional tests and examinations :

Special transmission homogeneity requirement for shaded filters (1067-EPH2)

This requirement enables us to verify the transmission variations of a shaded filter within a 10 mm ray circle around the reference point.

The sample is compliant if the transmission variations at these points are adhered to.


Special transmission homogeneity requirement for polarizing + shaded filters (1067-EPH3)

This requirement enables us to verify the transmission variations of a shaded and polarizing filter. The ratio of the values of the transmission factors in the visible parallel and perpendicular to the polarization plane.

The sample is compliant if the ratio is above 8:1 in category 2, 3 and 4, or is above 4:1 for category 1, and if the shaded filter variations are adhered to.

Special transmission requirement for polarizing filters and polarization ratio (1067-EPP1)

This test enables us to determine, for polarizing filters, the ratio of the values of the transmission factors in the visible parallel and perpendicular to the polarization plane.

The sample is compliant if the ratio is above 8:1 in category 2, 3 and 4, or is above 4:1 for category 1.


Transmittance (clear T0/dark T1) and filter category for photochromic filters (1067-FT13)

Diffusion of light (1067-LD01)

This test enables us to determine the reduced luminance factor of a screen. This test characterises the light diffused by the illumination of the eyepiece.

The samples are compliant if the value of the reduced luminance factor falls within the tolerance set out in the appropriate regulations.


Orientation of framed polarizing filters (1067-OP01)

This test enables us to determine the polarization plane, on a pair of solar spectacles framed and fitted with a polarizing filter.

The sample is compliant if the polarization plane does not deviate more than ±5° from horizontal. The alignment discrepancy between the right and left polarization filters must not exceed 6°.
