Filter material and surface quality (12312-MS01)

The aim of this test is to highlight all material and surface defects present on the eyepieces of personal eye protective equipment and ophthalmic eyepieces.

The zone of observation is 30 mm around the reference point, it excludes a marginal zone of 5 mm from the edge of the lens. A large range of defects may be observed on the latter (e.g.: bubbles, inclusions, scratches, cracks…).


Transmittance and filter category (12312-FT01)

This test enables us to measure, at the reference point, the transmission factor of a filter (visible and UV), to determine its category and to check requirements relating to car driving and road users  (recognition of traffic lights).

There are 5 filter categories from the lightest (Cat 0) to the darkest (Cat 4). The UV transmission requirements differ in function of the category.


Uniformity of luminous transmittance in the visible (12312-HFT1)

This test enables us to check the variation of the transmission factor in the visible (comparison between two measurements) and in the UVs of a single filter.

The largest of these two measurements being considered must not exceed by over 10% (20% for category 4), and the UV requirements must be met.

Refractive power of oculars (12312-PO01)

 The aim of this test is to measure the values of the spherical, astigmatic and prismatic powers of lenses. The measurements are made at the reference point.

The interpretation of the results, with regard to optical power, depends on the standard tested.


Minimum robustness of filter (12312-SM01)

This test is conducted on lenses  it enables us to verify their resistance to a quasi-static load. In order to conduct this test, a pressure of 100 N ±2 N is exercised on the lens, by a steel ball of 22 mm’s nominal diameter.

The sample is compliant if no lens fracturing or lens deformation is observed.


Resistance to solar radiation (12312-RRU1)

This test enables us, according to the claimed filter category, to establish a relative variation of the transmission factor in the visible and of the reduced luminance coefficient, after 50 hours’ exposure to the Ultra Violet rays.

The sample is compliant when all the standard-specific requirements are satisfied.


Resistance to ignition (eyepiece) (12312-RI01)

The aim of this test is to check the performance of the oculars on contact with an arm mounted at 650 °C.

The sample is compliant if it doesn’t catch fire, and if it does not continue to glow after the flame source has been removed.

Physiological compatibility (12312-CP01)

This test enables us to measure the rate of nickel released by the different parts of metal frames (rounds, bridges and arms).

For a sample to be compliant, the measured rate of nickel released from the entire frame, must be less than 0.5 µg/cm²/week.


Uniformity of luminous transmittance mounted oculars (12312-HFT2)

This test enables us to verify the variation, in the relative value, of the transmission factor in the visible of a single frame. Measurements are taken at the centre of vision between the right eyepiece and the left eyepiece.

The variation must not exceed 20% (related to the lightest filter).


Prism imbalance (12312-EPR1)

The aim of this test is to assess the difference in the prismatic power of a frame by measuring the deviations, horizontal and vertical, of the rays crossing the eyepieces.

The interpretation of the results depends on the standard tested.


Frame deformation and retention of filters (12312-RM01)

The aim of this test is to measure the solar or ophthalmic spectacles glasses bridge permanent deformation by exercising on the latter a force of 5 N over a distance equal to 10 % of the inter-pupil value and thus to highlight the minimum robustness or the deformation of the bridge of glasses.

The sample is compliant if no fracturing or cracking is observed over the frame as a whole, if the permanent deformation is = 2 % of the inter-pupil distances, and if the test lens does not break and remains in its housing.

Impact resistance of the filter (12312-RC01)

This test enables us to verify the resistance of eyepieces to an impact produced by a steel ball of a nominal diameter of 22mm, with a mass of 43g, hitting them at a speed of around 5.1m/s.

The sample is compliant if no fracturing or deformation of the eyepiece is observed.

Reflectance in the visible (12312-FR03)

Where solar lenses are declared non-reflective, the reflectance in the visible must be less than 2.5 % of reflection. The test is carried out using a spectrophotometer.


Solar radiation of reflectance in the visible (12312-RRR1)

This test enables us to establish a relative variation of the reflectance after 50 hours’ exposure to Ultra Violet rays.

The sample is compliant if the reflectance in the visible is less than 2.5%.


Increased endurance of sunglasses (12312-EA01)

Resistance to perspiration (12312-RTR1)

This test enables us to verify the resistance of a frame (metal or plastic material) to perspiration. The frame is suspended above a solution of artificial sweat inside a sealed receptacle which is placed in an oven at 55°C.

The sample is compliant if, after 8 hours’ exposure, it presents neither stains, nor colour alteration and after 24 hours, neither corrosion, nor degradation of the surface nor unsticking of one of the coating layers (on the parts likely to come into contact with the skin).


Impact resistance of the mounted filter (12312-RC04)

This test enables us to check the toughness of solar protectors, when they are conditioned at +55°C and - 5°C. The impact is from a steel ball of 22mm nominal diameter and 43g hitting the eyepiece at 5.1m/s.

The sample is compliant if it doesn’t become deformed and if it doesn’t break, if the side protection is not defective, and the eyepiece housing does not break.


Orientation of framed polarising filters (12312-OP01)

This test enables us to determine, on a pair of solar spectacles framed and fitted with a polarising filter, the polarisation plane.

The sample is compliant if the polarisation plane does not deviate more than ±5° from horizontal. The alignment discrepancy between the right and left polarisation filters must not exceed 6°.
